Graphite on an anthracite composite door

Dark gunmetal hardware on an anthracite grey door and windows: a tonal, low-maintenance finish for a crisp new-build entrance.

A new-build detached house in pale buff brick with a panel of white render around the entrance, slim anthracite windows and a flat canopy over the door. The composite door matches the windows in anthracite grey, and every fitting is Hardex graphite, a dark gunmetal that sits one shade lighter than the door. The result is tonal rather than contrasting: the hardware reads as part of the door, and the white render does the brightening.

Why graphite works on an anthracite door

EraNew build, 2000s onwards
Trend statusMainstream; anthracite leads composite door orders
Inspired byMonochrome new-build exteriors with matching windows
SuitsAnthracite, slate and black composite or uPVC doors

Tone on tone

Chrome and gold furniture stand out against anthracite, which is why they appear on so many doors. Graphite does the opposite: it is close enough to the door colour to look built-in, with just enough sheen to show the shape of the lever, knocker and numbers. It suits a house where the windows, canopy and garage door are all the same grey.

Made for composite and uPVC

These Fab and Fix fittings are designed for composite and uPVC doors with multipoint locks. The Hardex finish is tested to the highest corrosion grade in BS EN 1670 (480 hours of salt spray), so it copes with rain, frost and coastal air without pitting or flaking.

Security built into the letter plate

The architectural shield letter plate is designed to be fitted with its matching internal shield. Used together they make a TS008-certified letter plate, which stops fishing for keys or tools through the slot, and the internal hood also catches post and cuts draughts.

Measure before you order

Check your lever centres

Composite door handles must match the lock. Measure from the centre of the lever spindle to the centre of the keyhole: these Windsor handles are 92mm, the most common size on modern multipoint locks.

Lever or lever pad

If your door has a lever on both sides, choose lever handles. If the outside has a fixed pull and the door is locked by lifting the handle and turning the key, choose the lever pad version instead.

Pair the letter plates

Buy the external architectural shield and the internal shield together; the security certification only applies when both are fitted to the same door.

Fix numbers into the skin

On composite doors, fix numbers and a face-fixed knocker into the solid door skin above any glazing bead, and use the colour-matched screws supplied so nothing shiny shows.
