Where it comes from

A scroll lever on a shaped backplate is a Victorian and Edwardian shape, made for panelled doors in halls, studies and dining rooms. On stained hardwood the fittings were usually brass, and over the years they darkened to a brown-gold not far from the colour of the wood.

Why antique brass?

Dark timber is full of brown, amber and red, and antique brass carries the same mix of gold and brown. On the Paris handle the face is antique brass and the edge is darkened to a bronze effect, so the outline of the plate settles into the grain. Chrome or black would sit on top of the wood; this sits in it.

Why it still works

When the door itself is the feature, the handle shouldn't compete. A curved lever adds a little movement against a straight grain, and the darker edge keeps the brass from looking bright. Swap to rosewood knobs on a brass rose and the metal shrinks to a thin warm ring.

Getting it right

Lock or bathroom

The shaped backplate is about 168x47mm with four screw holes. The lock version has a keyhole and works with a mortice sashlock; the bathroom version has a privacy turn and works with a bathroom mortice lock. Spindles and screws are included.

Give the wood some light

Dark doors beside dark walls can make a hall feel closed in. Paint the walls warm stone, linen or chalky white and keep the floor paler than the doors, so the timber has space around it.

Check the door edge

On a wood door, a bright steel hinge stands out every time the door opens. Antique brass butt hinges, 102x67mm and 3mm thick, come in pairs with screws.

Fitting wooden knobs

The rosewood knobs come with two antique brass roses and fix to a threaded spindle with a grub screw. On a door, fit them with a tubular latch: choose a 3in (76mm) latch so your knuckles clear the frame.
