Near-black, not jet black

Pure black can look flat and harsh in daylight. Near-blacks with a hint of blue, green or brown read as black from the street but look softer up close, and they let satin brass glow rather than shout. A matt or eggshell finish also hides small marks better than gloss.

Straight lines throughout

A square centre knob, a slim drop knocker and a plain rectangular letter plate share the same clean geometry, so the door looks designed as a whole. If a square feels too strict, a round or octagonal centre knob in the same finish softens the outline without losing the modern feel.

Satin rather than polished

Polished brass is bright and needs regular cleaning to stay that way. Satin brass has a brushed, soft-gold surface that looks warm and contemporary, and it's the same finish as the levers on the doors inside, so the house hangs together from the step to the hallway.

Planning the door

A centre knob is a pull

A centre door knob is fixed and doesn't turn; it's there to pull the door shut. You still need a cylinder on the lock stile to get in, so choose the cylinder pull at the same time.

Size the letter plate

A 305 x 102mm plate takes large envelopes and suits a wide middle rail. Check the rail is deep enough and that the opening won't clash with a lock or joint.

Finish the inside

An internal tidy with a brush strip covers the cut edges of the letter opening on the back of the door and cuts down draughts in the hall.

Where the bell goes

Fix the bell push on the frame or surround on the lock side, around shoulder height, so visitors find it without stepping back from the door.
