Gold, silver and satin brass on a black barn door
A matt black boarded door, square-edged satin brass fittings and decorations kept to gold, champagne and silver for a quieter, more luxurious Christmas.
A new barn-style house clad in silvered larch, with a deep oak porch and a full-height glazed gable. The door is matt black with fine vertical boards, and its fittings are square-edged satin brass: brushed rather than polished, so they glow softly instead of glinting. The decorations stay in the same family of gold, champagne and silver, with no greenery, and a white flocked tree inside picks up the light from every brass surface.

Why satin brass suits a modern Christmas
One metal, inside and out
Choosing gold and silver decorations is easy when the door already wears a warm metal. Satin brass sits right in the middle of the palette: it's warmer than the champagne baubles and softer than the polished gold ones, so everything on the porch looks deliberate rather than bought in a hurry.
Square shapes for a barn
Period knockers and round knobs can look out of place on a boarded modern door. A square knob, a slim knocker with a flat bar and a square-edged cylinder pull repeat the straight lines of the cladding and the oak frame. They work just as well in July, once the wreath has come down.
Taking out the green
Skipping fir and eucalyptus is what makes this look feel expensive. A white flocked tree, gilded leaves, white-washed cones and lit birch branches keep the eye on texture and light. Against a black door, that also means the brass is the strongest colour on show.
Planning the door
Mind the board joints
On a vertically boarded door, centre the knob and knocker on a board rather than across a joint, and check the bolt-through fixings clear any internal framing before drilling.
Letter plate position
Fit the 305mm plate low enough to leave a clear gap beneath the knob, and keep it to the solid part of the door, away from glazing or a side light frame.
Match the inside
The 299mm interior tidy covers the cut-out on the back of the door. Pair it with the square euro escutcheon on the inside face so both sides of the door use the same square shapes.
Carry it through the house
The linear lever on a square rose uses the same finish and the same straight edges, so oak or painted internal doors look as if they were chosen alongside the front door.
