Getting a brass look on a modern front door

Why not real brass?

Solid brass is lovely on a painted timber door, but composite and uPVC doors need fittings designed for them: lighter, surface-fixed, and sized for multipoint locks. Hardex gold gives the bright look of polished brass with a hard-wearing finish tested for 480 hours of salt spray (BS EN 1670 Grade 5).

The colour shift

Anthracite grey has dominated composite doors for years. Heritage greens, black and deep burgundy are now taking over, and all three suit gold far better than grey ever did; the warm metal stands out against the dark colour instead of disappearing.

Fitting without fuss

The knocker and centre knob fix to the surface with a hidden plate, so there is no need to drill through a composite door. The telescopic letter plate adjusts to doors from 40 to 80mm thick, and clip-on hinge covers finish the job.

Getting it right

Measure the centres

Balmoral and Windsor handles need lock centres of 92mm (spindle to cylinder) and screw centres of 211mm. Check your old handle before ordering.

The knob doesn't turn

The 100mm centre knob is fixed in position and is used for pulling the door closed; it does not operate the latch.

Think about security

For extra protection choose the Berwick security handles; paired with a 1-star anti-snap cylinder they meet TS007 3-star.

Build it in one go

The Hardex gold set builder lets you pick handle, knocker, letter plate, knob and numbers together, so everything arrives in a matching finish.
