A Victorian terrace renovated with a modern eye: crisp white walls, wide oiled oak boards and black-framed glazing, but the original four-panel doors painted a deep, smoky blue-green instead of white. Against such a dark colour the hardware needs texture rather than shine, so every door has the Connaught lever in matt black. Its round grip is covered in fine diamond knurling, and the slim backplate with rounded ends covers old lock marks neatly.

Tone on tone

Matt black on a deep green door is a quiet, tonal combination. The handle doesn't jump out the way brass would, so the colour of the door does the work. Black also connects to steel-framed glazing, light switches and picture frames around the house.

Why knurling

Knurling is a fine diamond texture cut into the metal. On a matt black handle it catches the light and adds detail that a plain black lever lacks, and it gives a secure, satisfying grip.

Plates for old doors

Period doors often have the marks of earlier locks and handles. A backplate covers them, and the Connaught's slim plate with rounded ends looks modern rather than Victorian, which suits a renovation that mixes old and new.

Planning notes

Three versions

Use the latch handles on most doors, the lock version with a keyhole where you have a mortice lock, and the bathroom version with its turn on the bathroom door.

Knobs for cupboards and closets

Matching knurled mortice knobs work well on understairs cupboards or wardrobe doors where a lever would catch.

Black hinges

Swap old brass or painted hinges for matt black flush hinges so the door edge matches the handle.

Floor stops

A small rubber conical stop on the floor is a simple, inexpensive way to stop a door hitting a wall or radiator.
