Matt black on a natural oak front door
Crisp black fittings on pale oak, with white render and black timber around them: the modern farmhouse look, finished in marine-grade stainless steel where it counts.
A new-build farmhouse with smooth lime render, black-stained cladding and slim black windows. The front door is oiled oak with a tall glazed strip, and every fitting on it is matt black, picking up the window frames, canopy and lantern. Inside, white doors carry simple black levers, so the scheme runs on from the hall.

Why matt black works here
Black on oak
Matt black reads strongly against pale oak, so even simple shapes like a round knob and a profile knocker look deliberate. It also links the door to black window frames, cladding and lighting, which is what makes the modern farmhouse style feel coherent from the drive.
Built for exposed sites
Front doors in the countryside and by the coast take a beating from wind, rain and salt air. The centre knob and letter plate here are 316 marine-grade stainless steel with a black finish, the grade used on boats, so they resist corrosion far better than standard plated fittings.
Simple shapes
Modern country style is about restraint: one knocker, one knob, a plain letter plate and a neat bell push, with nothing decorative competing. Matching house numbers and a black cylinder pull finish the door without adding clutter.
Planning the door
Euro cylinder doors
Most new oak doors use a euro cylinder lock. Fit a matt black cylinder pull or a euro escutcheon outside so the brass cylinder face is the only contrasting detail.
Lever or knob
If your door has a euro sashlock rather than a nightlatch, use a matt black euro lever handle on the door instead of a fixed centre knob.
Mind the glazing
On doors with a glazed side strip, keep fittings to the solid boards and check the letter plate won't cut into a joint or the glass rebate.
Finish the inside
A matt black letter box tidy on the back of the door covers the cut edges of the opening and keeps the look consistent in the hall.
