Why dark doors and brass work so well

Making the handle the feature

On a white door a handle is a detail. Paint the door soft charcoal and the hardware becomes the focal point, especially in the low, warm evening light of a landing or bedroom corridor. That is the effect boutique hotels use to make a long corridor feel intimate.

Why knob on plate

A knob on a tall backplate has more presence than a knob on a small rose, and the plate protects the paint around it. The Broadway's tapering, tiered shape nods to 1930s apartment buildings, while the plain mushroom knob keeps it calm.

The finishing pieces

Double doors into a drawing room or dining room often have no handles at all, just a push plate on each leaf, which keeps hands off the dark paint and gives the pair a smart, symmetrical look. Where one leaf stays shut, a flush bolt set into its edge holds it firmly without any visible fitting.

Getting it right

Choose eggshell

A soft eggshell sheen on dark doors hides marks better than flat paint and shows the brass off better than gloss.

Light it low

Wall lights at 1.6 to 1.8m, rather than bright ceiling downlights, make satin brass glow instead of glare.

Match every version

The Broadway comes on latch, keyhole, euro and bathroom plates, so every door on the landing can carry the same design.

Double doors

On push-open double doors, fit a plain push plate to each leaf at the same height. Where the pair latches, add an 8in flush bolt at the top of the fixed leaf and a 6in bolt at the bottom.
