Matt bronze on natural oak
Limewashed walls, solid oak doors and paper lanterns, with soft dark bronze levers, flush pulls and shelf brackets that feel calm and crafted.
A 1960s bungalow stripped back and rebuilt in the warm Japandi style: Scandinavian comfort mixed with Japanese simplicity. The walls are limewashed in soft putty, the internal doors are solid natural oak, and the furniture is low and tactile. Dark matt bronze suits it perfectly; it looks like aged metal and sits quietly against wood grain. Sophia levers go on the oak doors, a circular flush pull on the sliding screen to the study, and bridge brackets carry an oak shelf in the living room.

Getting warm Japandi right
Wood first
Japandi is built on natural materials. Solid oak doors with visible grain set the tone, and everything else, including the metal, should support the wood rather than compete with it.
Why matt bronze
Black can look stark against oak and brass can feel too bright. Matt bronze sits in between: dark, soft and slightly warm, like metal that has aged naturally.
Quiet hardware
Flush pulls on sliding screens, a simple curved lever and plain brackets keep the look uncluttered. Fewer, better pieces matter more than decoration.
Planning notes
Oak door finish
Finish oak doors with a matt hardwax oil; a satin lacquer can look too shiny next to matt bronze.
Sliding screens
A 75mm circular flush pull is easy to use on a sliding door and won't catch as it passes.
Bathroom
The Sophia bathroom handle has a turn on the plate and needs a bathroom mortice lock.
Shelf brackets
Bridge brackets suit a thick oak shelf about 150mm deep, perfect for ceramics and books.
