A 1980s buff-brick semi with its original white uPVC door and side light, still sound and weathertight. Rather than replace it, the tired fittings have been swapped for Hardex gold: a straight Windsor lever, a Victorian urn knocker, a shield letter plate and serif numbers. Gold against bright white is crisp and traditional, and it picks up the warm tone of the brick.

The cheapest big change

White uPVC doors are still the most common front door in Britain, but most homeowners say they'd choose something else. If the door itself is sound, new furniture costs a fraction of a replacement and changes how the whole front of the house reads from the street.

Why gold on white

Bright gold gives white doors the contrast they lack, and it nods to the polished brass of older front doors. Hardex is Fab and Fix's hardened finish, tested to the top corrosion grade of BS EN 1670, so it keeps its colour without the tarnish of real unlacquered brass.

Same holes, new look

uPVC furniture is made to standard fixings. Lever handles on 92mm centres, shield letter plates and face-fixed knockers usually fit existing holes or need only small new ones, so the swap is an easy DIY job.

Measure before you order

Check the lever centres

Measure from the centre of the lever spindle to the centre of the keyhole. The Windsor handles are 92mm, the standard on most multipoint locks; older doors can be 68mm or 70mm.

Screw positions

If you want to reuse the old screw holes, measure the distance between the top and bottom screws on your current handle and compare it with the new backplate.

Fit both letter plate halves

The Nu Mail shield is made to pair with the Nu Mail internal shield. Together they block letter-box fishing and catch the post neatly inside.

Knocker with or without a spyhole

The urn knocker comes plain or with a spyhole facility. Choose plain unless you plan to drill the door for a viewer, which is sold separately.
