A five lever mortice deadlock would typically be fitted to a wooden door that does not have door handles. It would normally be used in conjunction with a nightlatch which allows the door to be open and closed without being deadlocked. Once the mortice key is turned, the door is locked and cannot be opened unless unlocked using the key. Again, a 5 lever deadlock is more secure than a 3 lever deadlock. A 5 lever sashlock offers the same deadbolt feature but also has a latch option and so should be fitted when using door handles with a keyhole in the back plate.
