Yes, you can fit new door handles to old screw holes—but only when the fixing positions, fixing type and condition of the door are compatible. If the holes do not line up exactly, do not force the screws in at an angle. Choose a handle with matching centres, use fresh fixing positions hidden by the new plate, or repair the old holes properly before drilling again.
Reusing the holes can make a replacement quick and tidy, but screw position is only one part of handle compatibility. The spindle, latch or lock, backplate size, door thickness and clearance around the keyhole or cylinder all matter too.

When can the existing screw holes be reused?
Old screw holes are suitable for reuse when all of the following are true:
- The new handle's fixing holes have the same centre-to-centre spacing.
- The holes sit in the correct position relative to the spindle, keyhole or cylinder.
- The new handle uses the same fixing method, such as wood screws or bolt-through fixings.
- The screws are the correct diameter and length for the handle and door.
- The timber or door material around the holes is sound and the screws tighten securely.
- The new backplate or rose fully covers old holes, paint lines and compression marks.
A screw that turns continuously without pulling the plate firmly against the door is not secure. The hole is probably stripped, the screw may be too short, or the fixing may have missed the solid section of the door.

The measurements that decide whether a handle will fit
Do not measure from the edges of the holes. Measure from the centre of one fixing hole to the centre of the next. On a round hole, a convenient method is to measure from the left edge of the first hole to the left edge of the second; this gives the same centre-to-centre distance when both holes are the same diameter.

Important: changing the handles does not alter the position of the latch or lock inside the door. If the spindle opening in the new backplate does not sit over the existing lock follower, matching the screw holes will not make the handle compatible.
Backplate handles, rose handles and concealed fixings
Handles on a backplate
Long backplates are often the easiest choice when replacing older handles because they can cover redundant holes and marks. However, backplate height alone does not confirm a match. Check the fixing centres and, where applicable, the distance between the spindle and the keyhole, bathroom turn or euro-cylinder opening.
If the old and new fixing holes are only a few millimetres apart, driving a new screw beside the old hole may cause it to wander into the existing void. Fill the old hole first and allow the repair to cure before marking and drilling the new position.
Handles on a rose
Many lever handles on round or square roses have a separate fixing plate hidden by a decorative cover. Because the screw positions are concealed, it is often possible to rotate or reposition the fixing plate and make fresh pilot holes. The rose must be large enough to cover the former holes and any unfinished area left by the old furniture.
Check for space around the latch body before drilling. A screw placed too close to the spindle hole can strike the latch case or enter the large bore behind the rose, leaving it with little material to grip.
Bolt-through fixings
Bolt-through or back-to-back fixings clamp the two handles together through the door. They generally give a more secure result than short screws in doors with thin facings, but they require corresponding holes on both sides and a clear route through or around the lock case.
Use the bolts supplied or specified for the handle. Bolts that are too long can bottom out before the plates are tight; bolts that are too short may engage only a few threads. Do not substitute ordinary wood screws where the product is designed for machine screws and threaded pillars.
What to do when the new holes do not line up
A mismatch does not necessarily mean the door is unusable. The correct remedy depends on the distance between the old and new holes and what the door is made from.
If the old holes will be hidden by the new handle
- Remove loose fibres, dust and broken screw fragments from the old holes.
- Repair holes that could interfere with the new pilot holes, particularly where the positions are close together.
- Fit the spindle and place both handles on the door without screws.
- Level the handles and confirm that the lever returns freely.
- Mark the new centres through the actual fixing plate or an accurate manufacturer’s template.
- Remove the handles before drilling controlled pilot holes.
Never use the fitted handle plate as a drill guide unless the manufacturer's instructions specifically require it. A slipping drill bit can damage the finish, and metal swarf can mark the door or enter the mechanism.
If the old holes remain visible
Choose a larger rose or backplate, repair and refinish the door, or select a replacement with matching centres. On a painted timber door, a properly filled and sanded hole can usually be made unobtrusive. On stained, veneered or factory-finished doors, the repair may remain visible, so covering it with the new plate is often the neater option.
Before ordering, compare the new plate's overall dimensions with the full outline left by the previous handle—not just the screw holes. Years of paint build-up, sunlight and cleaning can leave a visible “shadow” around the old plate.
How to repair stripped screw holes in a timber door
For a lasting repair, plug the damaged hole with sound timber rather than relying on filler alone to hold the screw.
- Remove the handle and inspect the hole for splits or crumbling material.
- Where necessary, drill the damaged hole clean and round using a bit sized to suit a hardwood dowel.
- Glue in a close-fitting hardwood dowel with a suitable wood adhesive.
- Allow the adhesive to cure fully, then trim the dowel flush without damaging the door face.
- Refit the handle temporarily, mark the exact screw centre and drill a new pilot hole.
- Drive the screw by hand for the final turns so that you can feel when the plate is secure.
Wooden splinters or matchsticks are sometimes used as a quick repair for a lightly worn hole, but a glued hardwood plug is more dependable where a handle is used repeatedly. General-purpose decorating filler may improve the appearance of an old hole, but it is not normally a suitable structural fixing for a handle screw.
The pilot hole should be suited to the screw's core diameter and the density of the timber. It needs to be large enough to prevent splitting but small enough for the threads to bite. Always test on scrap material if the correct drill size is uncertain.
Do not cure a loose handle simply by fitting a much longer screw. The screw could strike a lock case, pass through the opposite face or enter a hollow area without creating a secure fixing. Confirm what is inside the door first.
Extra care with hollow, veneered and engineered doors
A hollow-core internal door usually has a solid lock block around the handle position, but that block is limited in size and may be fitted on only one edge. If a screw misses it, the thin door skin alone may not provide a durable fixing.
Where suitable for the handle and latch, bolt-through fixings can spread the load more effectively. Do not overtighten them: excessive pressure can dish the handle rose, compress a hollow door skin or make the lever bind.
On veneered doors, use sharp drill bits and avoid levering the old plate away from the face. If paint or varnish has sealed the plate to the door, score carefully around its edge first. This reduces the risk of lifting the finish when the plate is removed.
Can old screw holes be reused on uPVC doors?
uPVC door handles are commonly secured with machine screws passing through the door and multipoint lock assembly. Replacement depends on a set of precise dimensions, not simply whether the handle looks similar.
Check:
- The fixing screw centres.
- The distance from the spindle centre to the centre of the euro-cylinder, commonly called the PZ measurement.
- The position of the upper and lower screws relative to the spindle and cylinder.
- The spindle dimensions and required length.
- The overall backplate dimensions.
- Whether the handle is sprung, unsprung or intended to work with the existing lock mechanism.

Do not drill extra holes through a uPVC door without establishing the location of the reinforcement, lock gearbox and internal mechanism. A misplaced drill can damage the multipoint lock or weaken the fixing. The preferred solution is normally a replacement handle with the correct centres and PZ measurement.
How to test compatibility before making any new holes
Carry out a dry fit
- Insert the spindle through the existing latch or lock.
- Place a handle on each side without inserting the screws.
- Confirm that both plates sit flat against the door.
- Check that the spindle is long enough to engage both handles but does not prevent them tightening against the door.
- Operate the lever several times and confirm that the latch retracts fully.
- Check that the lever returns to its normal horizontal position.
- Confirm that the fixing holes are clear of the lock or latch case.
- Make sure the rose or backplate covers all unwanted holes and marks.
If the lever becomes stiff only after the screws are tightened, the plates may be misaligned, the fixings may be overtightened, or the spindle may be under sideways pressure. Loosen the fixings slightly and realign both sides before assuming the latch is faulty.
A reliable fitting sequence
- Protect the door. Put down a cloth and cover vulnerable finished surfaces around the work area.
- Remove the old furniture carefully. Look for grub screws under the lever neck and concealed rose covers before applying force.
- Inspect the latch. Make sure its follower turns freely and the latch bolt returns without the handles fitted.
- Measure the exposed fixing arrangement. Record centres, plate dimensions, spindle size and door thickness.
- Repair weak holes. Complete any timber plugging before marking new positions.
- Dry-fit both handles. Confirm alignment and operation before drilling.
- Drill pilot holes where required. Check drilling depth and what lies behind each fixing position.
- Tighten evenly. Alternate between fixings so the plate is drawn down squarely.
- Secure the lever to the spindle. Tighten any grub screw onto the flat of the spindle where provided.
- Test with the door open. Operate the lever and lock repeatedly before closing the door.

Common problems after reusing old holes
The handle plate moves when the lever is used
The screws are loose, the holes are stripped or the screws have insufficient purchase. Remove the handle and inspect the holes rather than repeatedly tightening them. Continued movement enlarges the holes and can damage the door finish.
The lever does not spring back
Loosen the fixings slightly. If the action improves, the plates may be overtightened or out of alignment. Also check whether the handle needs its own spring cassette or relies on the spring inside the latch. An unsprung handle can feel weak when fitted to a latch not designed to support its weight.
The screws line up, but the keyhole does not
The handle is not compatible with the existing lock spacing. Do not enlarge the keyhole opening in the backplate or force the plate into position. Measure the spindle-to-keyhole or spindle-to-cylinder distance and obtain the correct pattern.
The handle fits, but old marks are visible
The replacement plate is smaller than the original or sits in a slightly different position. A larger backplate or rose may cover the marks. Alternatively, fill and refinish the door before final installation.
The fixing screw hits something solid
Stop immediately. It may be contacting the latch or lock case, internal reinforcement, a previous broken screw or another fixing. Do not force it with a powered driver.
Situations where the old holes should not be reused
- The timber is split, soft, damp or badly crushed around the fixing.
- The screw holes are elongated and allow the plate to move.
- The new screws enter at an angle to reach the holes.
- The fixing pattern pulls the handle away from the spindle centre.
- The holes have been enlarged beyond the fixing manufacturer's limits.
- Reusing them would position the handle off-level or stop the latch operating freely.
- The new handle requires bolt-through fixings but the old installation used surface screws.
- The door is fire-rated and the proposed alteration is not permitted by the door or ironmongery specification.
Fire doors require particular care. Door furniture, fixings, lock preparation and any repair to the door leaf may form part of a tested doorset. Do not drill, plug or alter a fire door solely on the basis of general fitting advice. Check the door and ironmongery documentation or use a competent fire-door specialist.
Choosing a replacement that makes the job easier
When shopping for new door handles, compare the technical drawing or listed dimensions with your measurements. Prioritise compatibility in this order:
- Correct function for the latch, lock, bathroom turn or cylinder.
- Correct spindle and lock spacing.
- Suitable fixings for the door construction and thickness.
- A backplate or rose large enough to cover the previous installation.
- Matching screw centres, where reusing the holes is important.
- The desired style, finish and handing requirements.
Exact screw-hole alignment is convenient, but it should never take priority over correct lock operation or a secure fixing. If the positions differ, a sound repair followed by accurately drilled pilot holes is better than forcing an unsuitable handle onto the door.
In practical terms, you can fit new door handles to old screw holes when they match precisely and still provide a firm fixing. Measure before buying, dry-fit before drilling, and repair worn holes properly. Those three steps prevent most loose handles, damaged door faces and avoidable compatibility problems.
