Choosing handles for double or French doors is not simply a matter of ordering two identical pairs. The correct arrangement depends on how the two leaves work, whether one is normally fixed, the type of latch or multipoint lock, the door material and whether the handles will be exposed to the weather.
Establish the door’s operating arrangement before choosing the design. This avoids common problems such as a decorative handle that turns but does nothing, a backplate that will not fit on a narrow stile, or a replacement uPVC handle whose fixing holes do not line up with the lock.
How to choose door handles for double and French doors
Start by opening the doors and watching what each leaf does. The leaf used for everyday entry is the active leaf. The other is the passive leaf, which may be held shut by flush bolts, surface bolts, a slave multipoint mechanism or another form of secondary locking.
This distinction determines whether you need one working handle, two working handles or a working handle with a matching dummy handle.

Does the passive door need a working handle?
Not necessarily. On many pairs, only the active leaf has a latch or lock. A lever fitted to the passive leaf may therefore be decorative rather than functional.
Use a working handle when
- the handle retracts a latch or operates a lock fitted within that leaf;
- the passive leaf has a slave multipoint mechanism designed to be operated by a lever;
- both doors are intended to open and latch independently; or
- the door manufacturer’s hardware specification calls for an operating handle on both leaves.
Use a dummy handle when
- the passive leaf is released separately using flush bolts or surface bolts;
- a balanced, symmetrical appearance is wanted but there is no latch to retract;
- the leaf uses a roller catch or magnetic catch and only needs a grip; or
- turning a normal lever would serve no mechanical purpose.
A dummy lever is fixed in position and has no spindle passing into a latch. Check how it is mounted before buying. Some dummy handles use concealed screw-on roses, while others require a mounting plate or a dedicated non-turning mechanism. A standard lever is not automatically suitable for conversion into a dummy handle.
Check the latch, lock and meeting stile

Plain latch furniture
For internal French doors that only need to stay closed, a lever on rose or lever on plain backplate can operate a tubular latch. On a pair of doors, the latch usually projects into a keep fitted to the passive leaf rather than into a fixed frame. The passive leaf must therefore be firmly held by bolts; otherwise pushing the active leaf may move both doors without releasing the latch.
Key-locking furniture
A sashlock combines a latch and deadbolt. Handles on a lock backplate have a lever aperture and a keyhole, while separate roses require a matching escutcheon below the lever. Confirm the lock centres before choosing a combined backplate.
Euro-cylinder and multipoint furniture
Modern exterior French doors often use multipoint locks. Lifting the lever engages hooks, rollers, mushrooms or bolts along the door edge; the key then secures the mechanism. These doors require handles made for the lock’s spindle-to-cylinder measurement and fixing pattern.
Some multipoint arrangements use a slave lock on the passive leaf. Do not assume that two outwardly identical doors contain identical gearboxes. Operate each leaf separately and identify what the lever and key do before removing the existing furniture.
Rebated doors
Many timber double doors have rebated meeting stiles: one leaf overlaps the other rather than meeting along two flat edges. A standard latch or sashlock may then require a matching rebate kit so that the latch, keep and lock face sit correctly. Rebate kits are lock-specific and are commonly produced for a particular case size and rebate depth, so they should not be selected by appearance alone.
Measurements that must match
When replacing handles, take measurements from the existing door before removing all the hardware. Photograph both sides, the door edge and the lock faceplate, then record the following.

Lever on rose, lever on backplate or pull handle?
Lever on rose
A lever on a round or square rose gives a clean, contemporary appearance and allows the key escutcheon or privacy turn to be positioned separately. It is a good choice for new internal timber doors where there are no old fixing marks to cover.
Check that the rose will fit on the stile without touching a glazing bead. Concealed bolt-through fixings are preferable where the door construction and latch allow them.
Lever on backplate
A backplate can cover previous fixing holes and is available in latch, lock, bathroom and euro-cylinder patterns. Long backplates are standard on many uPVC and multipoint doors because they accommodate the cylinder aperture and through-fixings.
The keyhole or cylinder opening must align exactly with the lock. A plate that looks approximately right may still have the wrong PZ measurement or screw centres.
Fixed pull handle
Pull handles suit doors secured by roller catches, magnetic catches or separate bolts. They are also useful when a passive leaf only needs a handhold. Confirm that the fixing method is appropriate for the door: back-to-back pulls, bolt-through pulls and face-fixed pulls require different preparation.
Internal and exterior French doors need different specifications
“French doors” describes a style of glazed paired doors, not a particular lock type. An internal timber pair and an exterior uPVC pair may look similar but need completely different hardware.

Choose an appropriate material and finish
Handles on the two leaves should come from the same range and finish batch where possible. Finishes described by similar names can differ noticeably in colour, sheen and texture, particularly when viewed side by side.
- Stainless steel: a practical modern option. Grade 316 stainless steel is generally preferable for demanding coastal or exposed locations, but it still needs routine cleaning to remove salt and contaminants.
- Solid brass: strong and substantial. Unlacquered brass develops a natural patina; lacquered brass retains its appearance for longer but abrasive polishing can damage the coating.
- Chrome and nickel finishes: well suited to many interiors. Polished finishes show fingerprints more readily, while satin finishes are usually more forgiving.
- Powder-coated and black finishes: create a strong contrast on painted or natural timber doors. Check exterior suitability because scratches or chips can expose the material beneath.
- PVD finishes: can offer improved colour and wear resistance, although performance still depends on the underlying material, environment and care instructions.
For exterior use, look for a clear statement that the product is intended for external installation. An indoor decorative finish may quickly spot, peel or tarnish when exposed to rain, condensation, pollution or salt-laden air.
Handing, lever clearance and door swing
Many lever handles are reversible, but not all. Cranked, offset, scroll-ended and asymmetrical levers may be handed. So can lever-pad arrangements, where one side has a lever and the other has a fixed or movable pad.
Rather than relying only on “left hand” or “right hand” terminology—which can vary according to the viewing side—record:
- whether the door opens towards or away from you;
- which side the hinges are on when viewed from the relevant face;
- which leaf is active;
- whether the handle is needed inside, outside or on both sides; and
- a clear photograph of the complete door pair.
Also check the lever’s projection and return. Two handles mounted close to the meeting stiles can clash as the leaves pass each other. A long lever may also strike a glazing bead, shutter, wall or the handle on the other leaf.
Where accessibility and ease of use are priorities, a comfortably shaped lever is generally easier to operate than a small knob. Return-to-door levers can also reduce the risk of clothing catching on the end. For buildings subject to access regulations, select the complete doorset and ironmongery against the project specification rather than judging compliance from the handle shape alone.
Spring strength and handle compatibility
A lever may contain its own return spring, rely on the spring inside the latch or lock, or use both. Heavy solid levers can droop if the latch spring is not strong enough. Conversely, an excessively stiff combination makes the door unpleasant to operate.
- Sprung handles include a spring cassette or spring built into the rose or backplate.
- Unsprung handles rely on the lock or latch to return the lever to horizontal.
- Double-sprung arrangements can work well, but check that the combined resistance is not excessive.
On multipoint locks, poor lever return is not always a handle fault. Misaligned keeps, door drop, swollen timber, a tight gearbox or hooks binding against the frame can all make the lever stiff. Disconnecting the handles and carefully testing the mechanism helps distinguish an alignment problem from a failed handle spring.
A practical selection process
Operate both leaves
Identify the active leaf, how the passive leaf is released and whether either handle lifts, turns a latch or operates a lock.
Identify the lock type
Look for a tubular latch, sashlock, euro-cylinder lock, multipoint faceplate, roller catch or separate bolts.
Decide between working and dummy furniture
Specify a working handle only where there is a compatible mechanism for it to operate.
Measure before choosing a design
Record PZ centres, fixing centres, backplate or rose dimensions, spindle size, backset, stile width and door thickness.
Confirm handing and clearance
Check the door swing, lever projection and clearance from glazing beads, seals, walls and the opposite handle.
Select the correct performance level
Choose interior or exterior suitability, the required security level, an appropriate finish and suitable corrosion resistance.
Buy all visible pieces together
Order working handles, dummy handles, escutcheons, cylinders, bolts and other visible furniture in a coordinated design and finish.
Important checks for fire, security and escape doors
If the doors form part of a fire-resisting doorset, an escape route or a security-rated entrance, appearance must not override the doorset specification. The handle, latch, lock, intumescent protection, closers, hinges and method of fixing may all affect performance.
Use ironmongery with suitable evidence for the door’s required application and follow the door or hardware manufacturer’s fitting instructions. Do not drill additional holes in a certified fire or security door without confirming that the alteration is permitted.
Similarly, an exterior handle is only one part of the security arrangement. Lock condition, cylinder specification, installation quality, door alignment and the strength of the complete doorset all matter.
Fitting details that make a difference
- Fit the latch or lock first and use its spindle follower to position the handles accurately.
- Keep the spindle level through both handles; forcing it at an angle causes stiffness and uneven wear.
- Cut an overlength spindle carefully and remove sharp burrs before assembly.
- Use bolt-through fixings where specified. Avoid substituting unsuitable screws that could interfere with the lock case.
- Do not overtighten rose or backplate fixings. A distorted plate can restrict lever movement.
- Check that the lever returns freely before closing the door for the first time.
- With the passive leaf bolted, check that the latch enters its keep without lifting, pushing or pulling the active door.
- Test the multipoint mechanism with the door open before testing it closed. Never force the key if the hooks or bolts have not fully engaged.

Keeping paired door handles working and looking consistent
Wipe handles regularly with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry them afterwards. Avoid wire wool, abrasive pads, bleach and aggressive metal cleaners unless the manufacturer specifically recommends them for that finish.
On exterior French doors, clean both handles at the same time so they weather evenly. Coastal and exposed installations need more frequent attention. Inspect for loose fixings, movement at the plate, lever droop and corrosion before these develop into larger faults.
Lubricate the latch or lock only with a product appropriate for that mechanism. Spraying a general-purpose lubricant through the handle opening can contaminate spring cassettes, attract debris or mark the door finish. If a multipoint lever becomes progressively harder to lift, investigate door alignment rather than simply applying more force.

The mechanisms behind them do not have to be identical: a working lever on the active door and a properly mounted dummy lever on the passive door can look perfectly matched while each performs the correct job.
If you are matching existing French-door hardware, retain the old handles until the replacements have been checked. Clear photographs and accurate centre-to-centre measurements are considerably more useful than a description such as “standard French door handle”—because, in practice, there is no single standard fitting shared by every double or French door.
