A white weatherboard house by the sea. The front door is a soft powder blue, the same shade runs along the tongue-and-groove in the hall, bathroom and boot room, and every internal door is white. Limed oak, linen, rope, rattan and blue-and-white stripes keep it relaxed, and satin nickel links the front door to the bathroom.

SuitsCoastal homes, large detached houses and bright new builds

Satin nickel, not chrome

Chrome is bright and cool with a mirror shine. Satin nickel is brushed, so it has a softer, slightly warmer grey that sits happily beside pale blue, white and limed wood. The brushed surface also hides fingerprints and water spots far better than a polished finish, which you'll notice on a bathroom door or a busy front door.

One blue, inside and out

Painting the front door and the hall panelling the same powder blue links outside and in, so the house feels considered from the moment the door opens. White internal doors stop the blue taking over, and give the nickel handles a clean background.

Gloucester on a backplate

The Gloucester lever has a gently scrolled grip on a slim rounded backplate. The latch, keyhole and bathroom versions share the same outline, so every door matches even when its job changes, and if you're replacing old handles the plate covers the previous fixing holes.

Practical notes

Pick the right version

Use the latch handles on most rooms, the bathroom version with its turn on the bathroom and en suite, and the keyhole handles where you want a lock, such as a study.

Positioning a centre knob

A centre door knob bolts through the middle of the door's width. Fix it at a comfortable pulling height, usually just above the letter plate, with the knocker higher up at eye level.

Numbers, bell and pull

House numbers are sold as single digits, so order one of each you need. A matching bell push on the frame and a cylinder pull under the lock cylinder finish the door, and make it easier to pull shut behind you.

Knobs for bedrooms

For a softer, cottage feel in bedrooms, the Victoria knob on a reeded plate sits comfortably alongside Gloucester levers elsewhere, as both are satin nickel and plate-mounted.
